Members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community have been celebrating Brooklyn Pride Week.

The celebration comes after years of struggling in the borough, and activists say many areas in Brooklyn have become the faces of their fight.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewel recently announced that the National Park Service will start to mark places of significance to the history of the LGBT community, and many are hoping that the Fort Greene neighborhood is included.

Fort Greene Park is one of the areas where LGBT community activists say they did not have to fear what others thought if they were seen with their partners.

Activists also say that gay bars like the Starlight Bar and Prospect Park are other notable spots in the LGBT community.

The Parks Department will be coming up with a panel of scholars to determine which sites will make the list. Some of them could even become national monuments.
