Tenants at the Melrose Houses say a lightning strike caused it to rain bricks overnight.
FDNY officials shut down 153rd and Cortland streets to investigate after several cars were hit by fallen bricks. They say a preliminary investigation shows that a strike likely projected the bricks onto the street.
News 12 Meteorologist Mike Favetta also confirms that a lightning strike did hit in the neighborhood just after 2 a.m. Many residents say they were woken up by the storm.
NYCHA and Buildings Department inspectors surveyed the building and have not issued a vacate order.
No injuries were reported.
