3:28PM New York is about to get hit by a major winter storm that will bring heavy snow, strong winds and dangerous travel conditions. Gov. Hochul is holding an update on statewide preparations.

Mayor Mamdani declares state of emergency during news conference

3:28PM Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared a "state of emergency" for New York City and issued a travel ban from 9 p.m. Sunday night until 12 p.m. Monday afternoon. All non-essential travel is banned from city roadways.

The mayor also announced NYC public schools will be closed on Monday, including no remote learning. This is the first "old school" snow day in years.

"We were given a waiver by the State Department of Education for a snow day," said Kamar Samuels, the city's Chancellor of Schools.

They did not announce a plan for schools on Tuesday.

Mamdani also announced the basement alert group is now active and high-water rescue teams are on standby for flooding emergencies.

Public libraries will be closed on Monday.

The mayor said overdose prevention centers will remain open overnight across the city.

He also noted to expect a delay in trash and recycling collection.

Catholic Elementary schools to be closed on Monday

The Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese had announced Bronx Catholic elementary schools will be closed Monday ahead of the storm.

The Wildlife Conservation Society has closed their zoos and aquariums to visitors today and tomorrow due to the storm. An update on when they reopen will be available tomorrow.

Saturday 7:53 PM: Mayor Mamdani said the city is readying more than 2,200 vehicles and loading over 700 salt spreaders, with plows to be deployed citywide once snowfall exceeds two inches.
