Liz’s Day, an annual event held in Floral Park supporting breast cancer research, is happening all day today.

The event is named after Elizabeth McFarland, a Floral Park resident who passed away from breast cancer in June 1999.

Since Oct. 1999, the event has been stepping up to fight the disease, raise awareness and support research for the illness.

“Having this event done in her name is bringing so much awareness to the need for a cure for breast cancer,” said Theresa Gabriel of Elmont.

“Her name is still being mentioned after she passed away in 1999. As a result of a tragic loss in our family, she created something good,” said Ginny Coughlin, the event’s founder.

Anna Caldarone has been coming to the event for years. She was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer last year. This year, at age 31, she has returned as a breast cancer survivor. She credits early detection with saving her life and wants to spread the message of awareness.

“As long as it reminds people to get their mammograms, then I'm happy to be here,” she said.

Over the past 24 years, the event has raised more than $1 million for breast cancer research.
