A loaded handgun was found buried in the sand on the beach at Coney Island.
According to investigators, a mother and her 10-year-old daughter were looking for seashells when they uncovered a loaded 9 mm handgun in a pool of water in the sand.
The discovery was made at around 2 p.m. Monday near West 19th Street. The gun was taken to a lifeguard, who then called police.
Authorities say the weapon was filled with sand and had to be sawed into pieces to make it safe to handle. There was one bullet inside.
