Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is teaming up with a local nonprofit to promote water safety.
A series of drownings have occurred in Brooklyn already this summer, the most recent being Ruhshona Kurbonova, a 2-year-old girl who drowned in Prospect Park Lake over the weekend. In the wake of this most recent drowning, the borough is now pushing to promote water safety with the help of the nonprofit Swim Strong Foundation.
"There's nothing that we could do to bring back this young child, but there's everything we can do to ensure preventing or alleviating a reoccurrence," says Adams.
The foundation advises people to only swim where a lifeguard is present and to never get in the water if there is none. Children should also always be supervised, even if a lifeguard is around, and parents should not rely solely on floatation devices.
