Dozens of Long Islanders came together Saturday to help Puerto Ricans who are dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona.

Jibaritos With Troops helped organize the donation drive of desperately needed supplies that will be sent down to the island.

"To see the children not have anything, that breaks my heart," said Jem Gallo. She decided she had to do something to help the people struggling to survive in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Fiona.

She dropped off several cases of water with Jibaritos With Troops.

The Hispanic aid organization collected donations all week to take down to Puerto Rico so it can be distributed to those who need it the most.

The group had several locations across Long Island that accepted needed donations of water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries cleaning products and diapers.

The group plans to ship the items down to Puerto Rico on Monday and through a grass roots network distribute it in days to some of the hardest hit areas of the island.

Stephen Soto, of Patchogue, dropped off some donations as well. He has family on the island and just knew he had to help.

"This is something tragic and this is some of our families and our friend, and our extended families, and we just try and help out people less fortunate who need the resources to take care of themselves right now," Soto said.

It's estimated that all of the donations could equal about 15 to 20 palates worth.

It will be flown down Monday with distribution possibly on Thursday.

Gift cards to places like Home Depot that can be used in Puerto Rico or other financial donations will be accepted here after that.
