"Love Your Gut Week" is here and health experts are reminding communities of the importance of eating healthy and taking care of one's gut.

The Gastroenterology Associates of Brooklyn says one's digestive system is an important part of the body and most of the time it's forgotten about.

When the gut is neglected, it can cause an imbalance in the body, leading to struggles with absorbing nutrients, storing fat and regulating blood sugar.

Anyone who experiences stomach aches, unintentional weight changes, fatigue or issues sleeping, even skin irritation, could be a sign of an unhealthy gut.

A gastroenterologist at the Gastroenterology Associates of Brooklyn spoke with News 12's Shniece Archer about the importance of a healthy gut.
