more than two years after Pop Smoke's death, his friends, family and the community are keeping his name alive with the third annual Pop Smoke day, a parade celebration on what would have been the rapper's 23rd birthday News twelve's Genie caldwell has more on how the community is making sure his legacy lives on kicking off at the Pop Smoke mural on East 80th Street. A parade filled with dancers, A band and a float made its way to Canarsie Park to celebrate the late Rapper's 23rd birthday. We're doing stuff for the kids for the community. That's the type of stuff that he like. We're just out here celebrating his life and just um, Doing what he would want to do. The Brooklyn Rapper's life was cut short after he was gunned down during a home invasion in February 2020 but years later, his impact on the community can be seen through the dozens of people who come out to remember him. He was getting ready to do a lot, a lot for us to the community, you know, and we, we lost that. So it does bring back the reminder for me, but it's also fun for me to see my community together as one. Too often our young people, they have this adversarial behavior towards each other and so this is about changing that and again, showing them that there's positive that can be that can come out of everything at the park brooklynites, enjoyed food vendors, train rides, activities in a basketball tournament. His mom says the emotional toll of her son's death has been gut wrenching, but she's grateful to see his name live on. You don't think as a person of color in America that you could really get something like this started. Um, or even in your own little hood, as they would say that something could be made this significant to, you know, pull people in. But it's been really a wonderful affirming experience as a person and as a mother that, you know, this could happen as the community carries on Pop Smoke's legacy. His mom says she's hoping to continue these annual celebrations, making them bigger and better each year.
