Exciting week so far. This week we are highlighting all of the amazing places and restaurants that make up our borough and make it special. And today we head out to Beans Brooklyn where News Twelve's Christy Reader is with the owner out there and another great plate in front of you, Christie. Tough morning for you. Yeah, we're jealous. Oh, look at this, look at this food and we've got more coming too. I'm sitting here with the owner. This is Johan. Thank you so much for opening early for us. Yes, to have you here. It's great to be here. Look, more food is coming out. You got more prepped a lot. So, you know, we have a bunch of foods here and, well, we're gonna have to sample it all. It's gonna be hard, but we're going to do it right. Yes. Yes. Tell us a little bit about this spot. You've been around for a while and it's a unique Persian American fusion food. More dishes right here. I would call it the American Mediterranean with Persian influence. So we had about 13 years ago, we turned this place used to be a bar and we turned it into a restaurant and change the name and it was mostly like American and Mediterranean food. But then because the name was Persian, it's my son's name. So everybody was asking you. So where's the Persian food? So we added some Persian specialty to it. So now it's a very extensive menu and we have a variety of stuff from, from flat bread to burgers to, you know, steak frites. We call it hanger steak. We have Persian stews and kebabs and we have a pistachio salmon coming up here. I'll take that right here. And this is very special piece is chicken, which is uh it's, it's really, really delicious. It takes a while, it takes about 20 minutes to prepare. But it's, you know what's so funny is you were telling me, oh, and oh, we gotta have something to dip everything into. You were telling me that you always, he's been in the business, the bar business for years. He was at studio 54 opening even though he looks very young. Um And you kind of held off from getting into the restaurant business. But look at you. Now, look at all this food. You, you're in it. Yes, this is my first restaurant. You know, because I believe that if you're not a chef don't do a restaurant, but I got into it and then here we are doing pretty good. I think. What is this dish real quick? This looks amazing. This is called, it's a Persian beef. It's a lamb stew and it's served with basmati rice saft from Basmati rice. It's a Persian rice. So it's prepped different differently. At least fattening rice because he has least starch in it. I like that. I like that. This is such a cute spot here on Hoyt Street, just off Atlantic Avenue. Very cozy in here, Asia and Dan. And we're just continuing to chat. I need to hear more about the studio 54 days. So we're gonna dig in and, and get to know each other. That's another show. I think that's the next show. I love that. Well, this week we are highlighting all of the amazing places and restaurants that make up our borough. Yeah, this morning we headed out to the Sunday Bar on Atlantic Avenue where news to Christie Reader is with the owner Megan Rickers right now, Christie. How's it going over there? All right, we're here on Atlantic Avenue and now we popped into the Sunday Day Bar and we're here with the bar owner Megan, um, Megan Rickers. Uh Thank you so much for opening a little early for us today. A little bit. Yeah, like six or eight hours early. Um Now this is the Someday Bar and I love the name. Tell us a little bit about how the name came about. Um So when we were opening the business, my partners and I checked out the neighborhood and you never want to step on anybody's toes. You never want to do something that's already been done because it's just not a good welcome, you know, for your neighbors. So, uh we figured out we wanted to be right in the middle neighborhood spot and my, uh my partners and I were talking about the name and I showed them, my list of bar names and they didn't think any of them were any good except for the name of my list, which was my someday bar. And so the name was born that way. I love it. Some day. That was your dream. And now some day is the bar. Some is the bar. We had a weird opening but we've been right before COVID but we made it so because of the neighborhood and our landlord and everything else. I love it. Uh Tell us a little bit about the spot. Um A lot of people will see Flamingos. What's the meaning behind this? Well, with the whole Sunday bar day dreaming theme, we kind of had this whole Alice in Wonderland uh vibe, but we didn't want anything super on the nose. So the Flamingo upside down queen plays croquet. It's, uh, it's a little bit more obscure. So good talking points. People want to know why everyone thinks it's because I'm from Florida and it's not so Alice in Wonderland. I love it. Um And people will see like the little tea pots up there. What's your favorite drink to make? I'm a whiskey drinker. So my go to is an old fashioned but we have the Georgi um which is a stout simple syrup with wild turkey. It's like our riff on an old fashioned little change. It end up here and you got a lot of specials, uh, every day of the week. You're doing something else. Uh, new. So pop in stop by, say hi. Right. Uh, especially Pride Month. We have a ton of pride events going on. So. Yes. Yeah. Awesome. All right. Well, Megan, thank you for waking up with us early here. Today. We are highlighting the places that make up our borough. Yeah. And this morning we're heading out to the sole spot on Atlantic Avenue where News Twelve's Christie Reader is with Chef Yaya. So you say we met Chef Yaya last hour, Christie go easy with Chef Yaya, please. This is a long morning for him. Yeah. Yeah, I know. You know what? He has been so great chef. Yeah, he has been working all night long. That's what you do. You work overnights to get all the orders in, right? Yeah, you have to. Yeah, that's the only way to get them on time. You have to come overnight. I know I am. I'm trying to go easy on them. Um I'm of course, you know, chatting them up here. I while we were talking, you told me about the name, how you got the soul spot as a name for the restaurant. I love it. Uh Give our viewers some insight, some history here. I was just sitting down like, you know what we need to find. We need to make a place where if you need some soul food, uh you need to go to a spot So let's call it the soul spot. I love it. We need a spot for soul food, the soul spot. So if you need a soul food and you're looking for a spot, just come to the sole spot and people do come. He told me at 11, that's when you see all of the, uh, drivers for deliveries line up right out front and there's a line right, there's a line to pick up orders online orders and, and the walking customers. So sometimes, you know, they be in each other's way, were able to get their food. That's what you like to hear when you run a business. Now, uh, we're sitting down, we, we were able to snag a table you and I, uh, because it's so early. This is uh, some of the signature dish that you uh plated for me. We've got okra. Well, tell us all everything we got. Yeah, we got the greens in there, the baked salmon, rice and peas and of course the fried chicken and this two. So those are very popular items. So I just can fit everything in there. But it, it's a big menu. Remember Asia wants that oxtail too. So, uh, well, we appreciate you talking to us all day. I'm gonna get out of your hair here so you can get some sleep. But everyone, you gotta come out on Atlantic Avenue, the soul spot been around for 20 years. The food's amazing. It makes me want to dance, Dan. Well, welcome back to News 12 Brooklyn where local matters. And this week we are going to highlight the places that make Al Borough great. And this morning we're heading out to the soul spot on Atlantic Avenue where News Twelve's Christie Reader is with Chef Yaa C Chris. What are the two of you cooking up this morning? Let's see it. Oh. Oh, my goodness. I can't take credit because, uh, he is making some fabulous things. I'm always getting, you know, the behind the scenes. Look. So come back to the kitchen with me. We're gonna talk with chef here. Hello. Good morning. How are you? Oh, I'm doing well. Um, so chef Aya, you have been cooking all night long, right? And tell me what you're cooking up. Let's focus on one thing first. This is Asia is dying for this. Yeah. Right now we get the coming out and the salmon bowls, the baked salmon, got the goat and the collard beans going on over there doing the fried chicken over there coming up. So, yeah, and this is all home cooked meals. And you were telling me how you like the fresh ingredients. That's what makes the difference. Yes, definitely. The fresh, always make a big difference. So, we got our deliveries every morning and everything is from the market to the kitchen, straight to the customers. You're celebrating 20 years in business. So you're doing something. Right. Right. Of course. Yes. So this year is going to be 20 years. It's been, yes. From all 3 to 23. It's 20. If you do the math, I love it. Look at the, oh, it's been 20 years. But when you having fun doing it, if time go fast, you know. Well, and you obviously are making really delicious food because people keep coming back. You were showing me the orders, you have orders that they're going out to Jersey, Long Island, Queens, Manhattan, I mean everywhere. So if you look at the wall, all this is for today. So we have to. So we start at 12 AM today. So we still on it. But you're gonna be here till about 10, 12. So we doing a 12 hour shift today where it's a busy day. You got to get the food out. Sometimes they want the food at the same time. Lunch is 11 o'clock for every company. So we have to get everything out at the same time. I love it. And uh yeah, different schools. N Y U like a lot of people order from here and uh they have, they can get the big portions too. So, and then it's not just the orders. You also do lunch starting at 11. Yeah, the restaurant opens at 11 o'clock from 11 AM to 10 PM every day. So that's there for, for the, for the walking customers, you know. So it's, it's basically like two restaurants in one. So we got the going on at the night time. So the morning shift is gonna come for the lunch and dinner. And when do you sleep? Usually I leave at six AM. But since you guys are here, I'm gonna do overtime. He, he's gonna stay a little bit later. And I, I love that. I mean, you're the chef here, but that doesn't stop you from coming in late putting in the hours and then cooking overnight. You do, you need that consistency. You have to put in the time and the effort in. You can't just say, oh, I'm the owner and just go to sleep and everything. It's not gonna work. I tell people that in the restaurant is that you have to, you, you have to get involved. That's why we're here for 20 years. I've been involved since day one. So I'm still here. So when they see me daytime, they think that like I do not walk because sometimes I walk at night, I go sleep and come back. Oh, he don't work no more. But I'm still here just when I walk, when everybody is sleeping a lot of people think that too about us. They think we don't work, we leave early. Um so yeah, a lot of great food here. We're gonna talk more coming up. Um we're gonna send it back to you. Ok, Christy, just one favorite to chef Extra ox gravy for me. Thank you. Oh uh Asia says extra oxtail gravy for her it for you.
