Big changes are coming to a busy Mamaroneck roadway after the tragic deaths of a mother and her little boy.

Molly Murphy Donovan and her six-year-old son Michael were killed while walking to school on June 20th. The two were walking in the crosswalk at the intersection of Mamaroneck Avenue and New Street when they were struck by a mini school bus.

Since the accident, parents and neighbors have been pushing village leaders to make safety changes to the roadway. Changes include:

  • Trees and bushes cut back

  • Crosswalks repainted

  • New signage and crossing guards added for the school year

  • New traffic light pattern at the New Street intersection, stopping traffic in all directions when pedestrians have the right of way

  • Reduced speed limit of 25 mph on Mamaroneck Avenue between the I-95 entrance and Boston Post Road

Village leaders are also considering installing speed cameras. Police investigators will release more details about the accident next week.
