New Yorkers who attend the party will be able to enjoy music and watch the festivities from dedicated viewing areas.

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced Monday that instead of a traditional swearing-in ceremony on Inauguration Day, he is planning a large block party in Manhattan.

The public swearing-in will still be on the steps of City Hall on Jan. 1, with 4,000 invited guests. Mamdani will be sworn in by his political idol, Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Once the clock strikes midnight on Jan. 1, the incoming mayor will first be sworn in by Attorney General Letitia James in a private ceremony with his family. Mamdani says the details on where that will take place will be announced soon.

Following the inauguration at City Hall, a block party will span from Liberty Street in the Financial District to Murray Street in Tribeca. It is free to attend.

"We are already so heartened by the response from New Yorkers, who understand this is not my success, it's our success, it's not my administration, it's our administration, similarly it's not my inauguration, it's for all of us," Mamdani said.

Mayor Eric Adams has not publicly announced if he will be attending the inauguration. Deputy Mayor of Communications Fabien Levy says there is no update, and the incoming and outgoing mayor has not yet discussed the topic together.

"The mayor is invited as are New Yorkers across the five boroughs to join us in celebrating the beginning of a new year," Mamdani said.
