New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani says he will apologize for inflammatory remarks he made about the NYPD in 2020 in the wake of the death of George Floyd.
At the time, Mamdani wrote that the NYPD was “racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety.”
The New York Times reported on Thursday that the Democratic candidate for mayor intended to apologize for those comments.
This comes in the wake of Gov. Kathy Hochul also calling on Mamdani to apologize for his comments.
"I have a lot of respect for him for saying that [he would apologize], and that he was going to do what he can to earn the respect of the men and women at the NYPD. I respect them immensely. I've seen them in action. So, I think it's an appropriate response," Hochul told reporters on Friday.
