A Brooklyn man was arrested after allegedly taking a black imitation pistol and drugs inside a local school.
According to police, 24-year-old Sarkis Avoyants walked into James Madison High School through the front door at around 5 p.m. Wednesday and put his bag through the X-ray scanner. That's when a school safety agent discovered the fake gun with an empty magazine and marijuana.
The imitation pistol is something you can legally possess, but Avoyants was found to have two active warrants against him. He was charged with misdemeanors in connection with those warrants, although it is not known what they were for. He was also cited for unlawful possession of marijuana.
It's not clear what Avoyants was doing at the school. News 12 reached out to the Department of Education for comment, but has not yet heard back.
