A man tried to walk out of Macy’s in Downtown Brooklyn with $1.5 million worth of jewelry but was unsuccessful.

Police said the attempted heist occurred Monday night, when the suspect allegedly placed the jewelry into a suitcase and attempted to leave the store.

An employee confronted the man, causing him to abandon the suitcase and flee the scene.

“I can’t believe it – $1 million,” one witness said.

Local business owners say theft has become a growing concern in the area. Danny Ahmed, who owns DK Fashion Gold across the street from Macy’s, said theft is a frequent issue on Fulton Street.

“It’s really sad, but we hear it all the time,” Ahmed said. “I see people walking out with a bunch of jackets. Sometimes a whole trolley of jackets.”

Ahmed, who has also been a victim of theft, said crime has increased since the pandemic. He’s worried that when Macy’s closes permanently, more people may target his store.

Macy’s has yet to respond to requests for comment. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
