An innocent man has finally cleared his name, after serving 21 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Derrick Hamilton, who was wrongfully convicted of a homicide back in 1991, was officially exonerated of all charges in court on Friday.
Hamilton was freed on parole two years ago, and won a landmark appellate ruling which repoened his case.
He was serving a life sentence for murder, after NYPD Detective Louis Scarcella allegedly threatened a woman to implicate him. That woman became the only eye witness in the case.
Many of Scarcella's convictions are now being re-examined after several reports were made of the former detective lying on the stand, coercing witness testimony and falsifying evidence. Scarella is retired, and according to Hamilton's attorneys because he is no longer a member of the NYPD there will be no criminality against him.
Hamilton says it's hard not to let go of his bitter sentiments toward Scarcella. However, he says he plans to help other innocent men who are behind bars be set free.
