The sound of children laughing and playing on their block in the city of Newburgh abruptly ended Thursday with the sound of gunshots.
Police say a 5-year-old boy was shot in leg while riding his bicycle on the corner of Washington and Clark Street around dinnertime. A second victim – a 29-year-old man - was fatally shot.
Neighbors say the victims live next door to each other and that the little boy who was shot is always outside playing.
“Sweet little boy. He’s always outside playing with his sister and all the other kids,” said Della Loving.
Officials say the child was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with injuries that are not life-threatening.
Police Commissioner Jose Gomerez visited the boy and his mother at the hospital.
“It is disheartening to see this child’s innocent face lying in a hospital bed, crying in pain,” said Gomerez. “As a community, we need to take a stand against gun violence.”
The shooting is the latest in what some say is an out-of-control surge of gun violence in the crime-plagued city since last year.
“It’s so sad for the community. You can’t even go outside in broad daylight and enjoy yourself,” said a neighbor who asked to remain anonymous.
A police department source tells News 12 the shooting is the fourth since Sunday, with a total of 50 shots fired since the weekend.
Police have not identified the victims, and no arrests has been made.
