A man is dead after being stabbed in the stomach while riding a shuttle bus in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon.
Police say the stabbing happened around 1:54 p.m. on the J-90 shuttle bus near Crescent Street and Etna Street in Cypress Hills. Officers responded to a 911 call and found a 41-year-old man with a stab wound to the abdomen.
He was taken to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to the NYPD, the incident appears to have started with a dispute on the bus. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The identity of the victim has not been released, pending family notification.
The attack has renewed concerns over safety on public transit. So far this year, NYPD data shows there have been 12 reported transit crimes across the 75th Precinct, which covers Cypress Hills and East New York—up from eight during the same period last year.
“I used to think it was safer than the train, actually,” said Esmeralda Ortiz of Cypress Hills. “But now, after this, I think it's everywhere. It can happen to anyone any time.”
Ortiz, a mother, added: “I don’t feel safe. I think I should take more precaution, be on the lookout for anything—especially since I have my kids.”
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the NYPD.
