A man trying to fight cancer by selling cookies and hot chocolate says the New York Department of Health shut him down and fined him.
Greg Maugeri says he decided to sell cookies and hot chocolate during the holidays to help fight cancer.
While Maugeri was selling his treats, he says the agency shut him down, confiscated the cookies and fined him up to $4,000 for vending without the proper permit.
A spokesperson from the agency explained the decision in a statement saying: “Mr. Maugeri had a New York State Certificate of Taxing Authority, which allows a holder to collect sales tax, but not to prepare, store, hold and serve food to the public.”
Maugeri says he is going to challenge the fine in court later this month.
