Man in police custody dies inside Brooklyn courthouse

According to court records, Soso Ramishvili was facing charges of larceny and criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

A man died on Friday inside Kings County Criminal Court while in police custody.
Police said Soso Ramishvili, 32, was found unconscious and unresponsive inside the courthouse at about 8:25 a.m.
EMS responded to the scene and pronounced him dead.
According to court records, Ramishvili was facing charges of larceny and criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
His first appearance before a judge was rescheduled multiple times and was set to see a judge at 9 am the morning he died at the courthouse.
The medical examiner will determine the cause of death and the NYPD's Force Investigation Division is investigating.
The Legal Aid Society and Brooklyn Defender Services released a statement demanding an independent investigation.
The organizations said Ramishvili "languished in pain in in custody for three days and was deprived of medical care despite repeated pleas from defense lawyers and other personnel to secure them needed care."
This death comes after News 12 featured another death involving a man in custody on Rikers Island. He died one day after being released from custody. The family of Ariel Quidone said after not hearing from him for days, they found he had been moved to the Elmhurst Hospital prison ward. The Department of Corrections told News 12 he was moved to the hospital after experiencing a medical emergency and then was released from custody the next day.
