A Bushwick man accused of shooting a gay man last month was indicted Tuesday.
Police say three men dressed in women's clothing were assaulted by a group of three men, including suspect Matthew Smith, on the morning of Sept. 27. The alleged attack happened near the corner of Bushwick and Putnam avenues. Smith allegedly fired six shots at the three men, hitting one of them. The victim survived.
Smith now faces charges of second-degree attempted murder as a hate crime. The two other men he was with have also been charged, but Smith faces the harshest penalties as the alleged gunman.
Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson says the suspects behind another hate crime are still at large. A transgender woman remains hospitalized after she was attacked near Halsey Street and Bushwick Avenue.
