New York City police say an officer shot a man in the chest and killed him after he threatened her with a chair outside a Brooklyn church.
Police say the man, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to Coney Island Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident occurred at about 12:45 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Coney Island Gospel Assembly. Police say the officers monitoring a truancy center in the basement of the church for students who cut school were notified that a man was trying to break into cars in the church parking lot. The officers went outside to investigate and found the man in the parking lot.
According to the police, the man threatened them with a chair. They responded by repeatedly telling him in English and in Spanish to put the chair down. When he did not listen and continued his advance, one officer shot him in the chest.
A member of the community expressed outrage that a police officer had shot the man in the chest, rather than his arm or leg.
Police say they will continue to thoroughly investigate the incident.
