A 25-year-old man was shot and killed by police in Brownsville Tuesday afternoon after NYPD officials say he charged at officers with a knife inside an apartment.

It happened just before 3 p.m. inside 108 Christopher Ave. According to police, a woman called 911 reporting that the father of her children had threatened to kill her. When officers arrived, the woman met them outside and brought them up to the apartment.

NYPD officials say the man was already inside when they entered. He allegedly pulled a knife from his waistband and began advancing toward officers. One officer fired a Taser, which police say was ineffective. A second officer then fired two rounds, striking the man in the chest.

The 25-year-old was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released at this time.

Police say two children were also inside the apartment during the incident but were not harmed. The woman was not injured.

The NYPD says the department's Force Investigation Division is reviewing body-worn camera footage from the officers involved. This marks the third police-involved shooting in New York City in the past two weeks.

The investigation is ongoing.
