A Brooklyn man wrongfully charged for a series of robberies is suing Suffolk County for $55 million after he spent over 27 years in prison.
Rodolfo Taylor, originally from Central Islip, was 24 years old when he was charged for robberies at two gas stations in 1984.
In January 2022, his convictions were vacated and the charges against him were dismissed.
This came after an investigation by the Suffolk district attorney's Conviction Integrity Unit found that several witnesses to the robberies originally identified other suspects.
"Mr. Taylor suffered 27 1/2 years in prison because the Suffolk County Police Department and its detectives hid, hid what would've exonerated him,” says Bruce Barket, Taylor’s attorney.
Taylor, now 61, is suing Suffolk County and a series of individual police officers for the wrongful conviction. He says while he sat in prison, his life stood still.
"I missed their Sweet 16s. I missed their weddings, graduations, funerals,” he says.
The lawsuit seeks $2 million for every year Taylor was in prison.
