New York City is trying to make composting a part of day-to-day life, with a program set to begin in some boroughs in just a few months.
The Department of Sanitation says it put compost bins across New York City to help create renewable energy.
Then in June, the city passed the Mandatory Curbside Composting Program to make going green even more accessible.
The Department of Sanitation says, “Just put all your food and yard waste into a sealed container – either IN a free DSNY bin or your own – and we will pick it up on recycling day."
The composting program aims to eliminate rats rummaging through trash and also support the environment.
Many Bronx residents told News 12 they believe the initiative is beneficial, but they have their doubts about whether people will follow the rules.
“I feel like it will help, but I feel like a lot of people are just very lazy,” said one resident.
Advocates of the initiative say we must start forming new habits now.
The plan will roll out in Brooklyn starting on Oct. 2, and then in the Bronx, Staten Island on March 25, 2024, then Manhattan in October 2024. It began last year in Queens.
