Con Edison crews are still on the scene this morning at Irving Avenue and Jefferson Street in Bushwick—after a manhole fire sent thick black smoke pouring into the street last night.
The FDNY says they got the call around 6:57 p.m. Thursday for a manhole fire at 18 Irving Ave. They responded with one engine and one ladder truck. Con Edison was also called in right away.
Video posted to the Citizen App shows black smoke shooting out of a manhole, with people crowding around and firefighters working to control the situation.
According to Con Ed, the fire knocked out power to about 240 customers at its peak. As of Friday morning, power has been restored to most buildings, but one building is still without electricity. Con Ed says they’re working to get everything back online.
News 12 counted at least four Con Ed emergency trucks still parked nearby. One manhole is barricaded with caution tape, and you can still smell burnt wires in the air. Streetlights on that block were also out.
FDNY has not said what caused the fire, and the investigation is ongoing.
