More than a dozen residents of Ryer Avenue were evacuated from their homes Sunday after three manholes burst into flames.
?I just heard a boom and ran upstairs to check on my kids,? says Norma Berdecia, who lives at 2376 Ryer Ave. ?Then the [FDNY] came in and said we had to leave the building.?
Fire officials say a possible electrical shortage caused by salt used to melt snow could be to blame for the manhole fires.
