Students at Kingsborough Community College are getting hands-on training with the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Kingsborough Maritime Technology Program allows students to train with the Coast Guard as they prepare for careers in the maritime industry.
The students engage in training several times while they study at Kingsborough.
"This is this is real-life experience," says their instructor, Capt. Tony DiLernia. "If you know you're in a serious situation where you really need a helicopter, you don't want to be going through the learning experience. You want to know what to do and be prepared for it before it actually occurs."
Students at Kingsborough train three times each year and go on to a variety of professions within the maritime industry.
