Marymount Manhattan College to merge with Northeastern University

A little bit of Boston is coming to the Big Apple.
Marymount Manhattan College recently announced it is going to be merging with Northeastern University.
Marymount is a private college on the Upper East Side. It was founded in 1936 and has about 1,500 students.
One of those students, Sienna Fusaro, is excited about the change.
“I guess I’m pretty happy about it because it kind of happened on accident. And I didn’t apply to Northeastern and couldn’t have gotten in there in high school, so it’s pretty good,” Fusaro told News 12 New York.
After the merger, the school will be known as Northeastern University – New York City. It’s expected to be completed in stages over time and is pending regulatory approval.
Marymount Manhattan College says the decision was made because of the challenges small liberal arts colleges are facing.
“The agreement provides an incredible opportunity for Marymount Manhattan College students to benefit from the extensive resources and global learning network that defines Northeastern University, while preserving Marymount Manhattan College's mission and signature programs,” said Abby Fiorella, chair of Marymount Manhattan College's Board of Trustees.
That’s something that Marymount junior Melanie Levedinsky is looking forward to.
“I hope that this only brings the good, and that Northeastern offers us the best program they can offer us and not take away the good things from Marymount,” she said.
Marymount Manhattan College says students should expect little change in their day-to-day experiences until the merger is complete. They say the timeline is unclear.
