Symbols of peace are being put up all over the world – and right here in Connecticut.

A peace pole was just installed in Monroe’s Wolfe Park. It is among the more than 250,000 poles worldwide, bearing the message: "May peace prevail on Earth."

There is even one like it at the pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

On Saturday, the Town of Monroe – with the help of the Monroe Rotary Club and Masuk High Schools Interact Club – dedicated a peace pole next to the Wolfe Den's playground. It was installed in the rock garden, a place covered with painted rocks that have kind and inspirational messages.

The concept of a peace pole started after World War II.

"It's about what we do in our communities. It's how we treat our neighbors, how we treat the vulnerable. Do we treat people with respect, with dignity and with kindness?” asked Monroe Rotary Club President Ken Kellogg.

"There's a lot of problems in the world today. People are very divisive…This is just a symbol that we hope that people will just…press the pause button a little bit," said Monroe Rotarian Dave Wolfe.

Eight different languages were selected for Monroe's peace pole. There are several others across the state, including ones recently installed in Rowayton and Newtown.
