Mayor Eric Adams has proposed a $1 billion spending plan that he says will use taxpayer dollars to "get stuff done" for New Yorkers.
Although the $102.7 billion proposal plan is a clear reflection of the priorities that Mayor Adams has highlighted for his second year in office, it's coming with some backlash.
Some of the priorities of that plan is the mounting expenses from the migrant crisis that are expected to grow to over $1 billion. Another $153 million has been budgeted for the proposed Willets Point redevelopment in Queens, which is supposed to feature a soccer stadium, a hotel and 2,500 affordable housing units.
The Citizens Budget Commission, in favor of the proposal, commended the cost savings and says the plan should not be delayed. However, some analysts disagree with the mayor's proposal and accuse the administration of overlooking the uptick in the most recent revenue numbers. Elected officials also questioned how the budget plan would fuel housing development and access for low-income New Yorkers.
Part of the mayor's plan is also to build 500,000 new homes in New York City over the next decade, although the housing plan for long-term projects remain unchanged at the moment
