Mayor Eric Adams is calling on Albany lawmakers to extend mayoral control of New York City public schools for another four years.
Come this June, Adams may not oversee the schools.
If state legislators extend mayoral control, it would mean Adams would be able to make decisions that affect the city's schools. The renewal of mayoral control would be included in Gov. Kathy Hochul's $216.3 billion budget proposal.
The state Legislature previously agreed to extend mayoral control for both former mayors Bill de Blasio and Michael Bloomberg.
Bloomberg was the first to gain mayoral control back in 2002. Shortly after it started, the graduation rate across the city increased from 50% to 80%.
Both Adams and Schools Chancellor David Banks attended New York City public schools as kids and are calling this decision a personal one.
