Mayor Eric Adams took the stage at the Apollo Theater Thursday to deliver his fourth State of the City address.
He painted his three years in office as time spent focusing on the working class and change.
"We are a union administration, a blue-collar mayor," he said.
His speech focused on keeping families in New York and making them feel safe and supported.
"The greatest city in the world must be the best place to raise a family," Adams said.
It's a message that comes as the mayor seeks another term in office while facing federal corruption charge and several key members of his administration facing investigations.
"There are some who said step down, I said no Ima step up," said the mayor.
Among his proposals is a $650 million investment to help end homelessness and make streets and subways safer.
The money would add 900 Safe Haven beds for the unhoused, while helping those with serious mental illness.
The proposal comes after a woman is set on fire on the subway in Brooklyn and killed.
"The visible mental health distress of the people of New York is something we want to solve for and it looks like they are going to attempt that," said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
The mayor also vowed to build more affordable housing.
"It's good to see he's focusing on building affordable housing in other places besides the South Bronx or other poor communities that are doing their fair share," said Bronx Council member Rafael Salamanca Jr.
