A new plan from Mayor Eric Adams to address the surge of asylum seekers includes a new Office of Asylum Seeker Operations.
Adams released a plan Tuesday highlighting the city's response to the surge of asylum seekers that arrived last spring. The blueprint includes the Office of Asylum Seeker Operations, which Adams says will serve as a 24/7 arrival center with a focus on resettlement and legal services.
The plan also looks into how the city will strive to train asylum seekers for employment. With a partnership with SUNY Sullivan, officials will look to provide job training and housing as asylum seekers wait for the authorization to work.
The mayor added that the city will also provide additional financial support to better handle what he's calling an unprecedented humanitarian crisis moving forward.
