NYC Mayor Eric Adams' criminal defense attorney is denying that the leader of the largest city in the country agreed to any deal with the Trump administration in exchange for the directive to drop Adams' corruption charges.

Attorney Alex Spiro also doubled down on his belief that this is a case with weak evidence and only one witness.

Federal prosecutors still have to act on the order from the Department of Justice and the judge has to sign off before the mayor's charges are officially dropped. Spiro expects those next steps to happen soon.

However, a 'dismissal without prejudice' leaves room for the charges, which allege Adams accepted favors and luxury upgrades for campaign contributions, to be re-filed.

Part of the DOJ's directive orders a review of the case after November's mayoral election, leaving some, inlcuding Adams' opponents, to wonder if the case could be revived then. It's an idea Spiro is firmly pushing back on.

"There is no looming threat, this case is over. It wasn't a real case to begin with," said Spiro. "A case this weak with a single witness that's that suspect, that's my opinion, that it would never gotten to a jury."

In its order, the DOJ said part of the reason behind dropping the charges was because the case kept Adams from devoting his attention and resources to handling the migrant crisis.

On Wednesday, federal officials rescinded $80 million from New York City that they say were paying for hotel shelters.

Mayor Adams says he's working with the White House and requesting an emergency meeting to get that money back.
