New York City is taking action to address two major issues: pay equity and support for disabled New Yorkers.
In a collaborative effort by the City Council, the mayor signed multiple bills to help close pay disparities within the municipal workforce. Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, who sponsored one of the pay equity bills, spoke about the importance of the bill.
"The promise of civil service pathways and the health of our municipal workforce are undermined when we allow paid disparities that disproportionately impact women and people of color to persist," says Adams. "It's unacceptable and demands our immediate attention, which is why the council prioritized this pressing issue."
The second set of bills will make affordable housing and shelters more accessible for New Yorkers living with disabilities. Adams singed a total of eight bills on both issues.
