Additional training is coming to the NYPD to help officers identify and interact with people with autism spectrum disorder.
The law was signed by Mayor Eric Adams Thursday and goes into effect immediately.
It aims to enhance awareness and develop the interpersonal skills officers need to safely respond to emergencies involving New Yorkers with autism.
The training is expected to help with the de-escalation of situations and prevent the misinterpretation of certain behaviors as aggression.
