Mayor Bill de Blasio is delivering on his pledge to make the city greener, starting with solar power in schools.
The mayor says that $28 million from city and state funds will be used to install solar panels at an additional 24 schools in all five boroughs, but specific schools have not yet been chosen.
The announcement was made at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx, which already has a solar paneled roof and will serve as a model for the others.
The installations will be paired with curriculum that will teach students about how the systems impact the environment. The goal is to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent, which de Blasio says is just one step in a much larger effort to save the planet.
The city also plans to put solar panels on 300 other public buildings.
