After returning from a vacation in Italy, Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed the death of Eric Garner, who died while in police custody.

A video of police officers taking the Staten Island man down went viral after an apparent chokehold was used on Garner.

"We are resolute about getting this right," said de Blasio. "I want every citizen of the city to know that they will be protected and they will be respected and that's the reality we must create. I have confidence that Commissioner Bratton and his team are taking us down that road effectively and that we will deepen these efforts in the coming days."

The mayor says a major part of improving the relationship between officers and the community is improving oversight mechanisms. He says he wants to see the Civilian Complaint Review Board play a more active role.

Chokeholds are banned under NYPD policy. One officer has been stripped of his badge during the investigation into Garner's death. Another officer is on desk duty. NYPD Commissioner Bratton has ordered a sweeping review of all NYPD training procedures.
