Mayor Bill de Blasio and first lady Chirlane McCray say mental health services for students in New York City public schools will be expanded in the fall.
McCray announced that students in schools citywide will be able to receive social emotional screenings.
The mayor also announced that the city is hiring 600 support workers, social workers and psychologists to better manage children’s mental health.
He says early childhood educators will also receive trauma care training.
New York City Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter says the goal is to ensure mental well-being for the future.
“We look forward to transforming all of our schools into healing centers,” Porter says.
De Blasio says they are also bringing in staff to provide mental health services during the Summer Rising program.
