Mayor Bill de Blasio was at Citi Field Saturday to announce a new partnership to help get city employees vaccinated against COVID-19.
Citi Field will now welcome tens of thousands of city employees to get shots in their arms at the mass vaccination site.
"Today we celebrate the fact that our city workers, our city employees who have seen us through this fight are going to get vaccinated here," de Blasio said.
The announcement came as de Blasio hopes to have those employees return to work on May 3.
"We're bringing our workforce back to serve the people in New York City to make sure this recovery is strong, but we want to keep them safe, and making sure the vaccination effort worked for them was part of it," de Blasio said.
The mayor toured the site which he said just one of several vaccination sites across the city that will vaccinate members of the District Council 37 Union, the city's largest union for public employees.
"In honor of those more than 200 DC 37 members who have died from COVID-19. We pledged as a union that we will do everything possible to protect those who are living and continue to provide services," said Henry Garrido, of District Council 37 AFSCME.
The effort will allow about 80,000 city employees who have been working remotely for the past year, to make their return to their work offices.
And as the city continues to see progress in its battle against COVID-19, de Blasio said this is an important step in moving the city's recovery forward.
"It has to be a recovery for all of us, and that means our city workers getting vaccinated. The people have been our heroes, getting what they need to be safe for the families to be safe," de Blasio said.
