Mayor: Free legal aid keeping families in apartments
Mayor Bill De Blasio says the effects of his office's initiative to provide legal help for tenants are starting to be felt.
According to the Mayor's Office, only one in 100 tenants three years ago had representation in housing court. That number has since improved to one in four tenants having legal help.
The aid has come in yearly investments totaling over $100 million for legal services.
"In human terms, 7,000 families, all of whom were facing eviction...were able to stay in their apartments," says Mayor Bill de Blasio.
In 2017, the city's funds for legal services will rise to $110 million, an additional investment from past years.
