Mayor Eric Adams announced a plan to increase police presence within the transit system in response to an increase in crime on the subway.

This comes as subway crimes were reportedly up 65% compared to this time last year.

One instance happened last month, in which a 40-year-old woman was killed after she was shoved in front of an oncoming train in Times Square.

Adams says his new plan involves increasing police within the transport systems as well as addressing mental health concerns and homelessness.

He says homeless services and Health Department workers will be at subway stations and other transit hubs to engage with those who might need help.

Advocates from the New York Coalition for the Homeless criticized the mayor’s plan, saying increasing police won't address the mental health crisis they believe to be the root of many attacks.
