Mayor Zohran Mamdani has proposed cutting $22 million from the NYPD budget during his fiscal year 2027 preliminary budget.
"When we took office, we inherited a historic budget gap," said Mayor Mamdani.
The mayor is now tasked with closing a $5.4 billion deficit over the next two years.
In addition to cutting funding from the NYPD, he has also announced the canceling of phased hiring of 5,000 new police officers that the Adam's administration secured funding for back in October 2025.
"That's sending bad messages they can't try to balance budgets on the backs of police officers and retirees," said Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association.
