Mayor Bill de Blasio is praising the success of his Vision Zero program, which launched a year ago.
The mayor said Wednesday that traffic fatalities dropped from 290 in 2013 to 250 in 2014. He also said that pedestrian deaths are the lowest they have been in more than 100 years.
De Blasio says speed cameras, lower speed limits and other improvements to roads and intersections have contributed to safer streets.
Department of Transportation officials say a project is expected to begin in Brooklyn later this year that will improve Atlantic Avenue near Washington and Underhill avenues.
