Mayor Michael Bloomberg is urging cooperation from all New Yorkers in an effort to keep everyone safe during the recovery stage of Hurricane Sandy.
Bloomberg says mandatory carpooling into Manhattan on all major East River crossings will remain in effect, despite the inconvenience. He commended the MTA for getting subway service partially restored quickly, and thanked Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his help.
The mayor says the city's death toll has risen to 37 as emergency workers continue to canvas some of the hardest-hit areas. Food and water is being distributed to those without power.
City schools are expected to reopen Monday, along with the majority of parks and playgrounds by 8 a.m. Saturday.
