The news of the two rivals, Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Eric Adams, turned allies — took many people by surprise.
It included mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, who took to X with a response.
In part of a statement, he wrote, “It's no surprise to see two men who share an affinity for corruption...align."
It was followed by a video compilation of the many times Mayor Adams directed jabs at the former governor.
It was business as usual on his campaign trail for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. He even praised his own performance on Wednesday night’s debate.
“I clearly won that debate,” said Sliwa. “They were like two kids in a schoolyard yelling at one another. I don't even think they recognized that half of what they said couldn't even be heard."
Sliwa was adamant that even if this was a ploy to run him off the ticket, he had absolutely no plans of doing so.
“They made the marriage, and they're probably going to write the book, which is ‘how to be a crook’ on taxpayers' dime,” said Sliwa. “So, we got two birds of a corrupt feather who are together now with the idea that somehow they’re going to muscle out me.”
The focus now shifts to early voting two days away.
