If you’re planning to travel this Memorial Day weekend — you’re definitely not alone.

AAA says more than 45 million Americans are expected to travel during the holiday weekend, making it one of the busiest Memorial Day travel periods on record. Most people are expected to drive.

At a gas station in East New York on Thursday morning, drivers were already checking prices before heading out. Gas at one station was selling for $4.39 a gallon — while AAA says the average price across New York City is closer to $4.66. That’s higher than this time last year.

Traffic experts say Friday afternoon could be one of the busiest times to drive all weekend, especially between late morning and the evening rush. Experts say leaving earlier in the day could help drivers avoid the worst congestion.

Airports are also expected to be packed.

The Port Authority says more than two million travelers could move through area airports during the holiday travel period.

TSA is also reminding travelers to double-check their identification before leaving home because REAL ID rules are now in effect. Travelers without a compliant ID could face extra screening delays at the airport.

Truck driver Tony Gjuraj says drivers should stay patient and give large trucks extra space on busy highways this weekend.

“Stay away from truck a little bit. Give a chance,” he said. “Respect us, we respect you -it’s gonna be safe.”

Experts recommend traveling early in the morning or later at night if possible to avoid the heaviest holiday traffic.
