The Jefferson Street shelter in Bushwick will no longer house single men, as the city transitions the site to serve women and families.
A City Hall spokesperson confirmed that 120 single men were relocated, heading to the Randall’s Island shelter. However, not everyone has made the journey across boroughs.
“I don’t feel good about it,” said one man who has stayed at the shelter since August. He expressed concerns about the move, saying, “Yes, because I work here in Brooklyn.”
Some men opted not to relocate to Randall’s Island, according to community organization Food Fight Brooklyn.
“It’s a rotating group of 20 to 30 people right now, but we’re in communication with over 200 people,” said a member of the group P Lin.
Despite the move, the future remains uncertain. Randall’s Island shelter is scheduled to close by the end of February, and City Hall says there’s no concrete plan yet for where residents will go next.
“The big fear we have is that after the inauguration, there will be mass deportations,” said P Lin. “We think shelters closing down are a trap for ICE to come in and deport people en masse.”
Food Fight Brooklyn is asking for community support, including donations of financial aid, suitcases, blankets, clothing and leads on jobs or housing for displaced individuals.
