(05/05/06) BROOKLYN ? Residents say the area of Brooklyn known as DUMBO is in the midst of a massive cultural renaissance.
The area used to be known as a ferry port and shipping center. However, artists moved in and populated the area in the late 70s and early 80s. The acronym, which stands for down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass, was actually coined by the artists living in the community. Creative minds were originally attracted to DUMBO for its low rents, wonderful landscapes and large loft spaces.
Many small businesses, restaurateurs and developers have recently joined the artistic community in DUMBO. The mix of creativity and business has created an area that can be enjoyed by many people.
